Press Release

Two new air programs for Croton’s commuters to improve air quality:
Parking Fee reductions for hybrid car owners and
Ride sharing service for everyone

Village of Croton-on-Hudson, July 27, 2005:  The Village of Croton-on-Hudson announced two new programs to help save area commuters money, reduce overall vehicle miles and lower harmful vehicle emissions. These programs are a small part of the Village’s efforts to meet the goals of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, first proposed by Governor Pataki inn 2001. Under this initiative, the Northeast states would reduce the release of carbon dioxide emissions 10 percent by 2010 and 25 percent by 2020.  Exhaust gas from the internal combustion engines of millions of vehicles in New York is considered the state’s single largest contributor to greenhouse gas accumulation in the Earth’s atmosphere. The state power plants are the second largest contributor of greenhouse gas. On March 21, 2005 the Village Board of Trustees approved the Village’s development several initiatives to reduce vehicle emissions in coordination with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). While NYSDOT works to meet the spirit of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, it is up to local communities to step forward proactively to experiment with individual programs adapted to the interests of local residents and businesses.

50% Fee Reduction for Low Emission Cars Owners at Village Parking Lot

The Village owns and operates the Croton Harmon Station parking lot with a capacity of over 2,000 vehicles for commuters using Metro-North’s Croton Harmon Train Station. While parking is sold on a daily rate basis for occasional commuters, the vast majority of commuters purchase a quarterly parking permit. A permit holder may register up to six vehicles on a permit. Quarterly resident and non-resident permit holders at the Croton-Harmon Station who can verify ownership of a hybrid or electric car will receive a fifty percent reduction in the cost of the quarterly permit.
The Honda Accord Hybrid, Lexus RX 400H, Toyota Highlander Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, Toyota Prius, Honda Insight Hybrid are hybrids currently on the market that qualify under this program and are eligible for this parking discount. Daimler’s GEM Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) also qualify.
Quarterly permit holders should present the certificate of title and/or bill of sale, and car registration for a qualifying car to the Village in order receive the parking rate reduction. See the Village web site for details. The New York State Department of Transportation, facilitated through MetroPool, Inc. of Stamford CT, will reimburse the Village for the difference between the original and reduced rate of the parking costs for those permit-holders at the Croton-Harmon station who can verify their ownership and use of a hybrid or electric vehicle with low emissions that will result in improved air quality.
See the Village web site for details. or call (914) 271-4781.

Web-based Ride sharing program promoted for anyone going anywhere

A second initiative is the Village’s promotion of a new and highly flexible service, NuRide, which may improve local commutes. NuRide is a ride network with which residents can plan trips online and get rewarded for riding together. NuRide is available to any area resident who travels regularly or irregularly, whether a car owner or not, whose employer has registered as a participating organization at  Registering at the NuRide website takes about five minutes.
NuRide is a web-based ride sharing service that is free to participating companies and organizations and riders and drivers.  For example, the Village registered itself at NuRide. So any Village employee may take advantage of the service for offering rides or seeking rides to and from work, the airport and anywhere else.
Joining NuRide is free and contains no on-going commitments. Participants will actually earn cash rewards for every trip taken whether 1 day a month or 5 days a week.
