On June 1st, 2008, the Croton-on-Hudson Police Department launched its Bike Patrol Unit. With four officers already trained and certified to ride, and more expected in the future, the Bike Patrol Unit currently has two Fuji Police Mountain Bikes that will be used as a resource during the warmer months and at special events to bridge the gap between automobile and foot patrol. The Bike Patrol officers, Sgt. Oles (Unit Coordinator), P.O. Gabrielsen, P.O. Wingfield, and P.O. Smith, use special uniforms and equipment that enable them to ride in a variety of weather conditions and terrain. With greater accessibility to the parks, trails and walkways, the officers will have the opportunity to be more proactive. Receiving positive feedback from the community already, the Bike Patrol’s benefits are apparent in terms of personal contact and interaction with village residents and businesses.
