Hurricane Sandy Update November 3, 2012
Village of Croton-on-Hudson E-Notice

Saturday, November 03, 2012, 1:00 pm
Sandy Hurricane UPDATE
Unfortunately, we are still hearing from Con Edison that full restoration in Westchester County will not be until next weekend, another 5 to 8 days from today (Saturday, 11/3).
However, we do have some good news of progress in resolving public safety issues. Con Edison crews have been working in Croton and will continue to do so over the weekend.
The transformer at S. Riverside and Maple was repaired, bringing power back to Van Wyck Shopping Center (CVS, Zeytinia, Post Office, etc) and restoring our traffic signals on N. Riverside Avenue.
We have had power restored to our critical facilities. As these came back online, some homes near these facilities have had power restored.
Our top priority today is opening all our streets to make them passable for both service trucks and residents. We are working to reopening all the remaining locations where fallen trees block or partially block the roadway.

The restoration work involves multiple utility crews, each with specialized equipment. At minimum, a wire crew is needed to restring the power lines. In some cases, where utility poles are damaged, a pole crew with an auger truck is needed to replace snapped poles. And in some locations, especially where poles are damaged, a transformer crew is also needed to replace damaged transformers. After poles and transformers have been replaced the line crews can restring the power lines.
In short, some areas of the Village, such as the Old Post Road South–Lexington–Sunset–Morningside neighborhood need all three kinds of crews and equipment to plant new poles, hang new transformers, and restring new lines.
We have a partial restoration of power on the following streets. Streets listed below are either fully or partially restored with power.

The Community Room will remain open 24/7 in the basement of the Municipal Building at 1 Van Wyck Street for those who want to recharge phones, laptop, or warm up.
We will be sending further updates as conditions change.
CAUTION: Residents must assume any wires tangled up with trees are LIVE WIRES. The 13 kilovolts that most local wires carry is enough to KILL. If a wire is live, anything touching that wire can be live too.
PLEASE DO NOT cut branches that are in contact with fallen power lines!!!
