Croton Yacht Club
Village of Croton-on-Hudson E-Notice

The Croton Yacht Club will present its second Educational Seminar “Secrets of the Deep” on Friday April 4th starting at 7:30 PM at the Croton Yacht Club. The event is free of charge and pre-registration is not required. Dr. John Ladd from the NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program and Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve will review results from the Hudson River bottom mapping project that has been ongoing since 1998.  The project surveys have revealed fields of shifting sand and mud that are critical habitat for bottom-feeding fish including two species of sturgeon both of which are on the federal endangered species list.  Surveys have also revealed large patches of ancient oyster reefs in the Tappan Zee.  Numerous ship wrecks some of which have great historic value have been imaged by project sonar.  Dr. Ladd will discuss survey techniques, survey results and ongoing research focused on understanding how bottom-feeding fish use their habitat.  An introduction to the mapping project can be found at
