Volunteers Sought for I Love My Park Day on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail
May 6, Saturday from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm is I Love My Park Day on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail! Volunteer and get an I Love My Park Day T-Shirt!
Adults and families are invited to join The Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct in celebration of New York’s State’s sixth annual I Love My Park Day. This event will give volunteers the opportunity to improve the Aqueduct’s plant life by removing invasive species, lopping tree strangling vines and removing litter. They will also help to restore some of its crumbling historic stone walls. Volunteers can expect to enjoy the camaraderie of neighbors and trail aficionados while making a difference.
Volunteers are encouraged to register in advance at~ptny.org/ilovemypark~but are welcome to just come on the day of the event.
In addition to being an event beneficial to the environment, the day will also be educational. Experienced naturalists will offer instruction on plant identification and plant removal techniques. A New York State Parks crew will work alongside the volunteers. A stone mason from J&C Masonry and Landscaping will lead the repair effort on the historic stone walls. With the on-the job training provided, there will be tasks for all skill levels and all ages.
Meet on the Aqueduct trail where it intersects with Quaker Bridge Road, Croton on Hudson (look for the white canopy). Park on the road by the designated volunteer signs, between addresses 99 and 124. It is suggested that volunteers wear long pants, sturdy shoes, a hat and a long sleeved shirt, and bring lunch, friends and family.
The day will start with coffee donated by The Black Cow Coffee Company, and Mrs. Greens will supply healthy snacks during the day. Sponsor SavATree is providing a crew and a chipper to deal with some of the more challenging areas. Feed the Birds and Run On Hudson Valley are donating prizes to be awarded during the afternoon break. Tools, gloves and bug repellent will be provided and volunteers will receive an I Love My Park Day t-shirt.
