This includes daily parking, overnight parking, long-term parking, and Amtrak parking.   Payment for daily parking will be via electronic pay stations only.   There are six pay stations available for use.  Three are installed near the former daily ticket building.  An additional three are located in front of the station by the handicapped section.  You may pay for daily parking at any of the 6 available pay stations.  Machines do not give change - exact payment or credit/debit card only.

FAQ’S
Pay-by-Space Meters
For Daily Parking Customers

  • How do these new meters work?
The new Pay-by-Space parking meters work in a similar manner to banking machines or kiosks that you may be more familiar with. There is signage by the meter, on the meter, and in the screen prompts to help you.  The basic steps for purchasing parking are as follows:
  • Note your space number before going to the meter.
  • Press any key on the keypad to turn the meter on (if it is in “sleep” mode).
  • Enter your space number and press [OK].
  • Choose the amount of time you want to stay and the associated rate.
  • Make a payment via credit card, bill or coin when prompted on the screen.
  • If using a credit card, the meter will communicate with the bank wirelessly to approve your credit card.  This usually takes only five seconds.
  • Once payment is accepted, a receipt will print out in the ticket cup located below the credit card reader.
  • Lift the clear cover up and remove your ticket.
  • There is no need to put the ticket on your dash as enforcement personnel can check your space at the meter.
  • If you have questions, you can get help by calling the Village of Croton-on-Hudson 914-271-4782.
  • Why did you make this change?
The Village has many reasons for changing parking technology, including improved customer convenience, predictability and reliability:
  • Parkers can now pay by coin, bill, credit card or cell phone.  You no longer have to worry about having enough change.
  • Everyone gets a receipt to prove payment.  This feature is especially beneficial to business parkers making expense claims on parking.
  • Extensive reporting capabilities give the village much better control over cash flow.
  • In our Pay-By-Space operations, parkers can now add time by cell phone to their parking should they find their original time purchase was not enough for the ultimate in convenience.
  • Pay-By-Space operation eliminates the need to return to your car to display your receipt.
  • Does this meter take credit cards?
Yes, the new meters accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.  “Debit” cards with the Visa logo are accepted but cannot accept pin numbers. You will also always receive a receipt to have a record of your credit card purchase.

  • If I use my credit card, what happens if it gets stuck inside the meter?
Unlike many other Multi-Space parking meters, banking machines or kiosks, the Village’s new parking meters do not ingest the card so you will always have physical contact and access to your card.

  • Is my credit card data safe if I use it on one of these new meters?
All of the credit card data stored on the meter is encrypted so that it can’t be read by anyone, including Village personnel.  The credit card transactions are also approved by the banks in real-time so you have an authorization number on your receipt to reference your transaction with your credit card company.
  • What denomination of bills/coins will the machine accept?
The machines will accept nickels, dimes, quarters, dollar coins, and $1, and $5, bills.  The machines will NOT accept $10 bills or higher.

  • Why doesn’t the parking meter give change?
The Village decided that the costs and benefits of the changers did not warrant the additional cost.  The Village has also structured the rates so that change should not be required for most purchases.  In addition, with the option to use your credit card, you can always ensure you only pay the exact price of the parking rate.

  • Why are you increasing our parking rates?
Village parking rates have not increased since June 2007.  During that time, village costs and inflation have steadily gone up.  The rate increases have been implemented to help subsidize these additional costs required to run the village’s parking operations.
  • Can I get a refund if I pay too much?
No, there are no refunds for overpayments.

  • I don’t like using machines!  I want to give my money to a person.
We recognize that it may take some time to get used to the new system, but we believe the added benefits like flexible payment options will make the learning effort worthwhile.  To help you better understand the meters, we will have “meter greeters” to assist parkers on-site during the first few weeks of operations.  We have also posted step-by-step instructions on our Web site to help you get familiar with the meters and have also posted additional instructions and signage on the street.

  • When does this new parking system take effect?  Are the rates and hours of operation changing?
The new system goes into effect January 4, 2010.  The meters will be operational 24 hours per day. The rates are as follows:
$1 per hour 7 hour maximum
$8 maximum daily rate until midnight
$11 maximum daily rate until 3 am
Multiple day rate -  $8 per calendar day (include day of departure and day of return)
Saturday and Sunday rate $1 per hour 4 hour maximum or $5/ calendar day
  • What happens if the meter doesn’t work?
If you are having difficulties with a parking meter or if you would like to report a problem with a meter please call the Village Parking Bureau at 914-271-4782.
Occasionally a meter may have a problem accepting a particular form of payment, for example, cards or coins, but it will continue to accept other forms of payment.  The payment message will automatically be adjusted to only indicate payment options that are working at that time.  There are six available machines—if one is not operational, the others will be.
  • Are the meters accessible to people with disabilities?
The Village’s contract with the meter manufacturer requires that all coin and card aperture locations, controls and operating mechanisms be compatible with the ADA requirements.
  • I am a commuter with a resident  (or non-resident) parking permit.  Do I have to use the meters too?
No, these pay-by-space meters are for customers who do not have a resident or non-resident parking permit.  Parking regulations for permit holders and resident weekend permit holders remain the same as before.
