Visual Environment Board Minutes 02-15-06
Advisory Board on the Visual Environment
Village of Croton-on-Hudson

Minutes:        VEB Meeting of Wednesday, February 15, 2006

Present:        Sandy Hardy, Kevin McManus, and Building Dept. Liaison Joe Sperber.

Absent:         Doug Wehrle, chair; Valerie Leis, Tom Smith, and Trustee Liaison Leo Wiegman.

The VEB considered and quickly approved two sign applications at its February meeting.

1. Lifestyles / Interiors by Lisa
Appearing before the VEB on behalf of her new interior design business, to be located at 33 North Riverside Avenue, was Lisa McTernan.  As designed by Signs Ink, the proposed sign measures 12 feet long by 3 feet in height and will be positioned over the store’s main display window.  A second, smaller sign will be mounted on the side of the building, which is located on a corner lot and so is permitted an additional sign under code.  The sign’s border and text will appear in brown, matching the general coloration of the storefront, with a green design; the size of the lettering will range from 11 inches for the upper-case, cursive “L” in “Lifestyles” to 4 inches for the upper-case “Interiors by Lisa.”  The remainder of the non-functioning lightbox, which currently extends the length of the storefront, will be removed.
VEB Discussion:
a.      Both VEB members in attendance spoke favorably of the sign.
b.      Sandy Hardy noted that the work “Lifestyles” could possibly be made slightly larger and bolder for greater readability.
c.      Ms. McTernan noted that she hopes to dress up the exterior of the building with window boxes and perhaps a planter in front to the extent allowed by the landlord.

VEB Recommendations
a.      The Board approved the sign as presented.

2. Bass & Abrams, Attorneys at Law
Jamie C. Abrams appeared on behalf of the law firm that will open its offices in a building at 109 Grand Street.  As proposed, the double-sided hanging sign will be painted black and feature silver vinyl lettering that spells out “Bass & Abrams, P.C” in 2-inch high lettering, with the words “Attorneys at Law” immediately below in letters measuring 1.67 inches in height.  The sign itself will be 34 inches long and 12 inches high at the center; it will suspended from an iron scroll bracket.  In addition, there is the potential for two smaller signs measuring 27 inches long by 6 inches high to be hung below the main sign once two additional spaces in the building are rented out.
VEB Discussion
a.      During the course of the brief discussion, Ms. Abrams confirmed that any future tenants will be required to have their signs fabricated by the same company (Sign Works) that is making the main sign.
b.      Members of the VEB spoke approvingly about the sign and its appropriateness in size and orientation for the Upper Village.

VEB Recommendations
a.      The Board approved the sign as presented.

The Meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
